In the year 1653, the VOC ship 'De Sperwer' set sail from Formosa to Japan but shipwrecked on the south coast of Korea. Part of the crew stayed in Korea for thirteen years. This partly historical, partly fictional story of Chan-mi, the daughter of a Korean general, is based on that event. Chan-mi is required by her father to marry one of the Dutch sailors to teach him the Korean language, as his knowledge of Western artillery and other weapons is highly valuable. For a while, the two lived happily together, but even in the seventeenth century, happiness was not always eternal...
