Ancient Egypt. In the Middle Kingdom, they had almost everything that was worthwhile in life. A comprehensive knowledge of the sciences, a vibrant view of the arts and a philosophy of life which worked well. It is no surprise that they were also literate and, among other things, produced wisdom texts which would be copied, distributed and read aloud in public places in towns and villages everywhere. The wisdom texts were precursors to the scriptures in some respects in that they offered guidance as to how to lead a good life.
Sixteen Days takes this a step further and, although it must be classed as fiction as it uses fictitious characters, its settings are highly accurate and it expands on the idea of wisdom texts by offering a very comprehensive guide as to how to live a good life. It is, in fact, a work of the purest philosophy and might well be listed under the humanities for this reason. However, it is also a most interesting and joyous read as Masud receives his guidance on the principles of life and living. It is a work which should be read by all. It could usefully be taught in schools and certainly should be a primary tenet of modern philosophy. Most of all, you will enjoy accompanying Matthew and Masud on their fantastic journey of discovery.
