For years, African-American men have been labeled an endangered species. Media images perpetuate negative and stereotypical images of black men, as thugs, gang members, and dead-beat fathers. The black men, who embrace the negativity, end up a statistic: unemployed, incarcerated, dead. On the other hand, those who do not embrace it, struggle to define who they are, as men. Yet, we are constantly challenged, a Black men, by others and by one another, to "prove our manhood." This book offers a Christian perspective into the issues and speaks to marginal brothers, as well as others who are still asking the question: What does it mean to be a Black man? The book accepts the present reality which suggests that black men are more likely to drop out of high school, become incarcerated, die from violence, and experience challenges with our health and wellness, than their non-black counterparts. ManHood engages aspects of the black male experience, through the lives of Biblical men, to provide insight for men to renew their sense of purpose, heal from their pain of their past, and reconnect with God, who created us strong, hardworking, intelligent, and destined for success.
