Rainer Maria Rilke (Prague, 1875 - Valmont, 1926) was an Austrian writer who wrote in German and French. He was the most significant and influential German-language poet of the first half of the 20th century; he expanded the boundaries of lyrical expression and extended his influence to all of European poetry. His work is viewed by critics and scholars as possessing undertones of mysticism, exploring themes of subjective experience and disbelief.
