When Noel Brock's grandparents bought the large old home on the Halifax River on the east coast of Florida in 1937, they had no idea that the house was haunted. After mysterious happenings, which include an empty rocking chair that rocks and a sighting of the lady in blue, the Cason family knows the new home has a ghost. Alice, as the beautiful young spirit is known, becomes part of Wanda and Denny's family as their three children grow up during World War II. The ghostly antics are even enjoyed by the airmen from the Auxiliary. Eventually the oldest daughter, Cassie, marries an airman and moves to Georgia.
Later, as a young girl, Cassie's daughter, Noel, has many ghostly encounters with Alice in her grandparents' home in Shady Hill, Florida. Much to her horror, sixteen years after the death of her grandmother Cason and the subsequent sale of the old home place, Alice resurfaces —- this time in Noel's home in Georgia.
Research leads to the heartbreaking scene in 1905 where Alice the person lost her life in the Halifax River. The tragic ending to Alice's life is the beginning of her wanderings for years to come. A visit back to the old home in Shady Hill helps Noel understand what Alice has been trying to tell her.
