Every Christian is a worker or is called to be a worker, working out the purpose of God for creation leading to the benefit of His heavenly kingdom. God has an assignment for every Christian which is to be executed within the lifetime of the Christian. When God has a job to be done or a purpose to be achieved, He looks for a man (or woman) among His children to execute that purpose. Such purposes are to be executed within the time frame that we are alive, active, and able to execute it. Working out this purpose is what can be referred to as running the race of Christianity. God's work, however, is not by compulsion. It is taken up by those who have the heart and want to do it. It is not compulsory but once accepted and taken up, performance is of necessity. There is, however, a divine timetable to be respected and work with. God timed our work. You must work while it is day, the night (the twilight years) is coming when no man can work.
