The storyline takes place somewhere between 1987 and 1988 in Brooklyn, New York. The four main characters: Yvette, Ko-ko, Donovan, and Carmine go through their life events, albeit in different directions. Yvette, the dreamer believes life ceases to exist without her. Self-absorbed and at times, selfish; she is an enigma in itself. Ko-ko, Yvette's best friend, and a straight "A" student, has goals of college. She exudes confidence and determination and does not let anything or anyone stand in her way. Donovan, the star athlete at his school has high expectations of himself and maintains an aura of "invincibility" around him at all times. His girlfriend is Ko-ko and has plans on marrying her one day. Carmine, Yvette's self-described "sweetheart" after a chance encounter at a club, maintains a cloud of secrecy and suspense. With Carmine, it is classic example of "what you see is what you get."

The overall theme of the book strategically shifts rapidly from playful to eventful with each passing page. As in reality, characters are engrossed in drama, danger and at times, misfortune. Choices are ultimately made, and as a result, repercussions are inevitable. Expect misfortune to be a central focus as well as the unexpected. More importantly, see how each central character to the book deals with their individual misfortune and the unexpected in their own unique way.
