After its unconditional surrendering in 1945, Germany lost all its own rights to govern and administrate. The inception of the East-West conflict put an end to the victorious powers' intention of uniting Germany in a new statehood. The British military government initiated their own constitutional development in their zone by allowing democratic parties, ordering democratic local elections and building autonomous federal states that were later integrated into the federal structure of the western zones or into Germany as a whole. This book describes the path from the reconstruction of state structures to the foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany.
