History Hub presents a complete biography of Da Vinci from start to end, whose remarkable story inspires us even today.
On April 15, 1492, Leonardo Da Vinci was born in the town of Vinci. His parents were Ser Piero, a legal official, and Caterina, a peasant. His father brought Da Vinci, who was born out of wedlock, into his home, when he was three. Da Vinci went to study under Andrea del Verrocchio in 1467 when he was fifteen. Like any apprentice, he needed to perform necessary errands at first, nearly as a servant would. Later, Da Vinciwas able to prepare pigments and canvases on his own; at that point, he had drawn Verrocchio's works and different models. While Da Vinci was mastering painting, he also started researching anatomy and even learned how to dissect corpses.
In 1500, Leonardo went to Venice where a war with the Ottoman Empire was at its height. The 1499 French invasion of Lombardy and the House of Sforza's counter-attack involved a significant part of the Mediterranean coast in the battle. Da Vinci went to the Senate of Venice and volunteered to become an engineer. He wanted to build a dam that would permit Venetian powers to bring the Turks into the Isonzo river valley to flood the gateway, effectively annihilating the enemy's forces. However, his proposal was ignored.
Mona Lisa and The Last Supper are Da Vinci's most renowned artworks. On the other hand, his last painting, Saint John the Baptist, was completed in Rome, but it is one of the least well-known. In April 1519, Da Vinci wrote his will and on May 2 of the same year died at the age of 67.
