Saint Petersburg, 1900-1907. Dr. Kozyrev has an official medical practice in St. Petersburg. But it doesn't bring in much income. Kozyrev visits the house of Mrs. Rostokina, the widow of a general, who supplies the St. Petersburg aristocrats with kept women. The widow introduces Doctor Kozyrev to Vera Nikonova, who has a house on Vasilyevsky Island. Soon he begins to perform illegal abortions in a house on Vasilyevsky Island (abortions are officially prohibited) in order to improve his financial situation. The famous scandalous aristocrat Bagrova appears in a house on Vasilyevsky Island along with her young pregnant daughter. As a result of an unsuccessful abortion, the girl dies.
Kozyrev, together with Mrs. Rostokina, buys a mansion on Krestovsky Island near St. Petersburg. There, with the help of his mistress Vera Nikonova, he sets up an establishment for rich men called the House of Sleeping Beauties. However, not everything goes well in a new business. Mrs. Bagrova dreams of destroying Doctor Kozyrev and his mistress Vera Nikonova. And she does everything possible to achieve her goal.
