Caroline Northampton wishes to escape her life of idle privilege. She believes a woman should take her destiny into her own hands and has joined the London National Society for Women's Suffrage. If her father knew he would disown her.

She becomes ill and is visited by the family doctor. To her surprise she is highly attracted to the forbidding Dr. Devlin Morrissey, but she realizes such a deep attraction has no place in the liberated life she wishes for herself.

The trouble is, due to unforeseen circumstances, she finds herself unwillingly married to him. And Devlin Morrissey is set on teaching her a lesson, thinking her responsible for forcing him into a marriage he resents. While Caroline does not believe herself in need of a lesson from any man, she does long to find out what remedy her new husband thinks she needs.
