After being summer ousted from Florentine public life following the end of the Republic and the return of the Medici from his exile at Albergaccio, near San Casciano, Machiavelli tried to regain their trust by dedicating this treatise initially to Giuliano, and after the latter's death, to Lorenzo, the Magnifico's nephew.
