After being summer ousted from Florentine public life following the end of the Republic and the return of the Medici from his exile at Albergaccio, near San Casciano, Machiavelli tried to regain their trust by dedicating this treatise initially to Giuliano, and after the latter's death, to Lorenzo, the Magnifico's nephew. A fundamental book of modern Western political thought, The Prince is intended to be a kind of guide for the exercise of power. In it Machiavelli encapsulates the experience he gained during his activity as first secretary of the Republic, which in his many diplomatic missions had led him to meet the main protagonists of the political life of the time.
