The Mediterranean diet is a way of eating that originated in the Mediterranean region and has spread worldwide in recent decades due to its numerous health benefits. The Mediterranean diet is based on a high intake of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, seeds and olive oil and a moderate intake of fish, poultry, eggs, dairy products and wine. It also includes a limited intake of red meat, processed foods and sugar. The Mediterranean diet has a long history and can be traced back to the traditional diet of countries around the Mediterranean, such as Spain, Italy, Greece and Turkey.
