A second Civil War is being waged in our public schools' classrooms. On one side, Progressives try to keep moving forward toward the very American ideal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of justice for all. On the other side are descendants of a Southern slave-holding states who dearly pine for the good, old days of states' right when they could rule as they pleased. Thus, since 1865, a guerilla battle of lawfare, subtle and tricky end-runs around federal legislation, has been waged by the former Confederates. It has created a Total Institution in the American school system that indoctrinates, classifies and stupefies generation after generation of citizens into an easily regulated sense of "normalcy." Invisible redlines are created to segregate neighborhoods, academic content, gender roles and placement in this Institution. Though the Constitution claims that "separate is not equal," the infrastructure created by these states' rights agenda-driven politicians create a New Jim Crow, a New Separate but Equal and a New Confederacy. Ultimately, it is a battle for the minds of American youth and the battleground is the classroom.
