He took out a small piece of paper and stared at it. It looked like just any piece of paper, but it was anything but that. This was a very significant document for Deyon. It was the paper that certified him getting his piece of land in Colorado. The piece of paper Deyon had worked long and hard to procure and purchase. He had even served in the Union as a colored soldier in the great war to be able to save up for it. As a former slave, this piece of paper was the most important thing for Deyon.
After being a slave for a good part of most of his life, the paper symbolized the one thing that was so important for Deyon and others like him. Freedom.
