Learn the history of the Hoosier State's smallest county with this historical guide to Ohio County and Rising Sun, Indiana. The book covers the early settlement, involvement in the underground railroad and events of Ohio County. The book includes a time line of events as well.

Ohio County History

Established in 1844 by the Indiana Legislature, Ohio County is the state's smallest county. It also has the oldest continuously operating court house in Indiana.

Rising Sun, Indiana

Platted in 1814, Rising Sun is one of the state's oldest town. Rising Sun was an important river port during the era when the Ohio River served as the region's most important shipping medium.

Underground Railroad

Its proximity to the Ohio River and Kentucky, Rising Sun was an important conduit through which slaves escaping from bondage in the South fled on their way to Canada and freedom. Freed slave Samuel Barkshire and his family provided the means for many slaves escaping to freedom.
