In this book, Nation Building, Our Challenges, Resilience and Responsibility, Eugene Holiday chronicles the process leading up to the attainment of country status on October 10, 2010, and documents the developments during the formative years of Sint Maarten as a new Country within the Kingdom of The Netherlands. Nation Building is comprised of a selection of fifty of his speeches and an overview of important constitutional, political, economic, social, safety, security, cross border, interkingdom and interregional developments during his tenure as the first Governor of Sint Maarten from 2010-2022. As reflected in the title, the book is about the challenges we faced, the resilience we displayed and our responsibility as we set out on our journey to build our nation, Sint Maarten, during the formative years as a new country. As such he provides some insight into his thoughts, views and actions directed at helping build our nation. The book is organized in seven related parts representing the following nation building themes: (1) the pursuit and attainment of country status by exercising our right of self-determination, (2) promoting excellence in governance, (3) upholding our constitution as anchor in political developments, (4) fostering economic sustainability, (5) promoting social cohesion, (6) building safety and security capacity, and (7) strengthening partnership and cooperation. The speeches in each part are preceded with an overview or big picture of significant developments based on public sources intended to provide some background and context to the main themes. The book concludes with an epilogue titled: "Our country will go as far as we take it." It is in other words our responsibility, the responsibility of each succeeding generation to build our nation, Sint Maarten. Nation Building documents and chronicles important historic developments during the formative years of our new country and provides building blocks for the further development of Sint Maarten. It is intended to stimulate dialogue and be a source of information and inspiration for public and corporate officials, their advisors, civil society actors, educators, residents, and particularly our youth for the further building of our nation, Sint Maarten. This based on the view that our knowledge of our history is the best foundation for the building of our future. It is available as a 356-page paperback and as an eBook.
