"La sublevación de Martínez" is a short story by Blasco Ibáñez that, with an ironic tone, describes the adventures of a humble man from the Mexican countryside who uses the revolution to get ahead in life. Illiterate, megalomaniac and dominated by his wife, Doroteo Martínez's rise to power reflects the drift of the revolutionary movements so common in the early history of the Mexican Republic. And if the author denounces the chaos and arbitrariness of Mexico's institutions, the portrait of the protagonist and his wife, the fearsome Guadalupe, a woman of character who has gone to war with her husband, offers an amusing but stark look at the protagonists of a convulsive time.
