Thirteen was genetically engineered. His species is identified by numbers and raised to never question orders. This has earned them the title Bastards. They have been created for one purpose and one purpose only: exterminate the mutated Flaws who inhibit the decayed wastelands beyond the walls of a fortified city of elites.

On a mission, Thirteen encounters Chanta, a Flaw. Her glowing red eyes pierce more than the darkness when she attempts escape. Thirteen is struck by her beauty.
