Edging Towards BioUtopia interrogates one of the most important environmental conflicts in recent science and technological history: the controversy about a proposed genetically engineered futurenatural, which may also invite catastropic biodystopia. The intense struggle over the environmental release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and its highly politicised and narrow regulation offers a new politics of reordering life, intimately involving biobiz, science and resistance. In a revealing behind-the-scenes account, this book investigates the political technologies and regulatory manoeuvres in Australia aiming to contain and brush aside probing public debate. In the end, the book asks: just where is the bioutopian 'there'? Must society follow them, perhaps reluctantly or too passive, down the steep descent, or should we control them more earnestly in their endeavour to redesign nature?
