Against the turbulent backdrop of the Vietnam War, two childhood sweethearts struggle to find their way back to each other.

Everyone thought Rachel and Jake, close friends since childhood, would marry. But when Jake emigrates to Canada to escape being drafted to fight in the Vietnam War, Rachel stays behind. They have no choice but to carve out new lives far from each other, connected only by their occasional handwritten letters.

Recognizing that they might never be able to be together again, each of them begins a new relationship. Even as they hope to find acceptance and love, they also mourn the loss of the other.

Rachel makes a series of bad choices that bring her to a frightening crisis point. Overwhelmed and desperate to find a solution to her problems, she considers fleeing to Jake. Now Rachel must find a way to cross the seemingly unbridgeable distance—both literal and metaphoric—that lies between them or risk losing Jake forever.
