In 1066, Roger Corbeau is on a quest to redeem his soul, which, at his oder brother Hugh's death, he loses for coveting Hugh's inheritance of the Barony of the Pays de Caux. Despondent from grief and guilt, he is asked be Abbot Lanfranc to accompany him to Rome to petition the Pope for the designation "Dei Gratia Rex Anglorum" for Duke William of Normandy. The petition granted, the Pope orders Roger to return to Tournus in Burgundy to await His legate who carries the formal Papal Declaration and three papal gifts to assist William in claiming the throne of England. Roger is to escort the delegation from Tournus to Normandy. The delegation does not arrive and is found slaughtered just south of Tournus, but the legate and the gifts are missing. Roger goes in search of both, confident this quest will redeem his soul.  The clues he uncovers involve a wolfman, two orphans living in a convent hospital, and a member of the tyrannical lege lord family, all of which are intgral to the mystery.  Roger Corbeau is an ancestor ot the author . The historical setting ,and many of the characters of the mystery, are factual. The mystery is fiction.
