As a child, Amanda can see pictures in the clouds and spends hours imagining stories about the wispy apparitions. When she tells her mother she wishes she could be a writer, her wish is overheard. A stranger gives her an antique pen, along with the advice to take good care of it, and Amanda's creativity flourishes.

Years later, however, she learns success has a price, with a cost that is more than she is willing to pay. With help from a childhood friend and a telepathic cat, Amanda fights for her life. As the battle rages, she finds that love has many forms and comes from all directions.
