Working as a teacher in her father's school on Dartmoor, Alice Brunham loves the moorland and its flora and hopes to write a book on local folklore and the wildflowers still used for healing by older villagers. On one of her long walks over the moor, Alice meets Daniel Wells, who is staying with his cousin to recover from an accident. It is not long before Alice realises that they have much in common and that she is falling in love with him. Daniel, however, is nursing a secret which threatens to destroy their relationship and throw Alice into the arms of ambitious school teacher Peter Fletcher, a man she despises. Can the old healer Jem's charm to heal her broken heart really work?
