Teaching novels in their historical context can be a challenge for teachers and students. This resource, written by two experienced FSL teachers, presents a series of learning centres providing students at the senior secondary level (grades 11 and 12) with the opportunity to engage in small group, hands-on learning within the historical context of France during the Second World War. This advance preparation will allow them to study Au Revoir, les Enfants by Louis Malle, or another film or novel treating this time period in France, such as Monsieur Batignole or The Children of Chabannes, with greater understanding. Centres include authentic listening, reading, speaking and writing activities as well as tracking sheets for students. Answers are provided for each centre and a final task for summative assessment is included.
