Henry James' humorous short story, 'A Bundle of Letters', follows several residents of a Parisian boarding house as they correspond with friends and family. Miranda Hope, a young American woman traveling solo in Europe, writes to her mother about the treatment of women abroad. Meanwhile, the other residents exchange letters filled with stereotypes and snobbery, from Violet Ray's dismissal of Miranda as "horrible" to the German professor's contempt for all non-Germans. James injects twists and turns of personality into his characters, making them more complex than simple caricatures. 'A Bundle of Letters' is a satirical take on cultural misunderstandings and national pride in late 19th-century Europe.
