"Joanna Godden" by Sheila Kaye-Smith is a 1921 thriller novel set amongst the sheep farmers of Romney Marsh in Kent. Joanna, clearly a formidable woman, takes the story by storm and shows herself to be a heroine worth rooting for. She pulls valiantly against the conventions of her community in a way that struck the hearts of women when it was first published and continues to up to this very day.
