Do I need other software in order to use OverDrive Media Console?

The mobile versions of OverDrive Media Console do not require additional software, but OverDrive Media Console for Windows and Mac® do need additional software.


On Windows…

On Mac…

  • iTunes v7.6.2.9 (or newer). Download iTunes.
  • Transfer to an iPod shuffle® requires iTunes v8.1.0.52 (or newer).
  • Transfer to an iPad requires iTunes v9.1 (or newer).

How do I get started with OverDrive Media Console?

On Android…

  1. Install OverDrive Media Console on your device.
  2. Browse for titles at an OverDrive-powered library or retail website.
  3. Check out.
  4. Select the title's 'Download' link.
    OverDrive Media Console opens and downloads the title.
  5. Select Menu > Play to play the title.

On BlackBerry…

  1. Install OverDrive Media Console on your device.
  2. Browse for titles at an OverDrive-powered library or retail website.
  3. Check out.
  4. Ensure that the device has an SD card installed.
  5. Select the title's 'Download' link.
    OverDrive Media Console opens and downloads the title.
  6. Select Menu > Play to play the title.

On iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch)…

  1. Install OverDrive Media Console on your device.
  2. Browse for titles at an OverDrive-powered library or retail website.
  3. Check out.
  4. Select the title's 'Download' link.
    OverDrive Media Console opens and downloads the title.
  5. Select the title to play it.

On Windows and Mac…

  1. Install OverDrive Media Console on your computer.
  2. Browse for titles at an OverDrive-powered library or retail website.
  3. Check out.
  4. Click 'Download'.
    You may be prompted to open or save an ODM file. Choose to open the file.
    OverDrive Media Console opens and the 'Get Media' box is displayed.
  5. Click OK.
    The 'Download' box is displayed.
    Choose which Part(s) to download.
  6. Click OK.
    The title is downloaded.
  7. Click 'Play' to play the title.

On Windows Phone 7…

  1. Install OverDrive Media Console on your device.
  2. Browse for titles at an OverDrive-powered library or retail website.
  3. Check out.
  4. Select the title's 'Download' link.
    OverDrive Media Console opens and downloads the title.
  5. Select the title to play it.

How do I authorize OverDrive Media Console to open EPUB eBooks?

Before you download EPUB eBooks you need to authorize OverDrive Media Console with an Adobe ID.

On Android…

  1. Get an Adobe ID.
    Visit Adobe.com to create an Adobe ID. If you have an Adobe ID, skip to step 2.
  2. Open OverDrive Media Console.
  3. From the Library, select Menu > App Settings.
    The 'App Settings' page opens.
  4. Scroll to 'eBook Options'.
    Enter your Adobe ID and password.
  5. Select the 'Authorize' button.
    OverDrive Media Console is authorized.

On BlackBerry…

  1. Open OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Select Menu > Options.
    The 'Options' screen is shown.
  3. In the Adobe Account section, enter your Adobe ID (email address) and password.
    If needed, Get a free Adobe ID.
  4. Select 'Authorize'.
    OverDrive Media Console is authorized.

On iOS (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch)…

  1. Get an Adobe ID.
    Visit Adobe.com to create an Adobe ID. If you have an Adobe ID, skip to step 2.
  2. Open OverDrive Media Console.
  3. From the Library, tap Get Books + > Settings.
    The 'Settings' page opens.
  4. Scroll to 'eBook Settings'.
  5. Tap 'Authorize'.
    The 'Adobe Authorization' screen opens.
  6. Enter your Adobe ID and password.
  7. Tap 'Authorize'.
    OverDrive Media Console is authorized.

On Windows Phone 7…

  1. Get an Adobe ID.
    Visit Adobe.com to create an Adobe ID. If you have an Adobe ID, skip to step 2.
  2. Swipe left-to-right from the 'recent' screen to show the 'menu' screen.
  3. Select 'settings'.
  4. Swipe to the 'eBook' panel.
  5. Select 'authorize'.
  6. Enter your Adobe ID in the 'Adobe ID' box.
  7. Select 'Authorize'
  8. Enter your Adobe ID password.
  9. Select 'OK'
    OverDrive Media Console is authorized.

How do I return EPUB eBooks and MP3 Audiobooks using OverDrive Media Console v2.4 (or newer)?

On Android…

  1. From the bookshelf, tap the ‘+’ icon next to an eBook or audiobook, then tap ‘Return/Delete’.
  2. Tap ‘Return then Delete’.
    The book is both returned and deleted from your device.

On BlackBerry…

  1. From the bookshelf, select the title you would like to return, then push the BlackBerry button.
  2. Select ‘Return/Delete’.
  3. Select ‘Return then Delete’.
    The book is both returned and deleted from your device.

On Windows Phone…

  1. From the bookshelf, tap and hold an eBook or audiobook, then tap ‘return/delete’.
  2. Tap ‘Return then Delete’.
    The book is both returned and deleted from your device.

Do I need the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade?

If you are using OverDrive Media Console for Windows, a security upgrade is required in order to play DRM-protected titles. The first time you attempt to download DRM-protected titles, OverDrive Media Console checks to see if a security upgrade is needed. If prompted, follow the instructions provided in the prompts to complete the security upgrade.

How do I perform the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade?

If you have Windows Media Player 11 (or newer)…

  1. While connected to the Internet, open OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Go to Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade.
    A dialog box is displayed, notifying you that Windows Media Player requires a security upgrade.
  3. Click 'OK'.
    Windows Media Player opens, and the 'Windows Media Player' dialog box is displayed.
  4. Click 'Upgrade'.
    Windows Media Player indicates that it is 'Connecting to server…'. Once connected, the security component is downloaded and installed. Windows Media Player indicates that the security component was upgraded successfully.
  5. Click the 'Close' button in the 'Windows Media Player' dialog box.
    The 'Media Usage Rights Acquisition' dialog box is displayed.
  6. Click the 'Play' button.
    Windows Media Player plays a brief file, confirming you have completed the upgrade.

If you have Windows Media Player 9 or 10…

  1. While connected to the Internet, open OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Go to Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade.
    A dialog box is displayed, notifying you that Windows Media Player requires a security upgrade.
  3. Click 'OK'.
    Windows Media Player opens, and the 'Windows Media Player' dialog box is displayed.
  4. Click 'Yes' to perform the upgrade.
    The 'License Acquisition' dialog box is displayed.
  5. Click the 'Play' button.
    Windows Media Player plays a brief file, confirming you have completed the upgrade.

I updated to OverDrive Media Console v2 for iPhone®/iPad® and the app doesn't work. What should I do?

If you experience issues after updating, please restart your device…

  1. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the device until the red slider appears.
  2. Slide the slider and wait for the device to shut down.
  3. Press the Sleep/Wake button again to restart.

If this does not resolve the issue, please uninstall and reinstall the app.

Can I transfer titles to portable devices using OverDrive Media Console?


On Mac, you can transfer MP3 Audiobooks to Apple devices only.


On Windows, you can transfer MP3 Audiobooks to most MP3 compatible devices. WMA Audiobooks and WMA Music can be transferred to most MP3 players, and many WMA Audiobooks can be transferred to Apple and Zune devices. WMV Video titles can be transferred to devices that support DRM-protected WMV files. To review a list of compatible devices, click here.

How do I transfer titles to portable devices?

  1. Open OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Select a title and click the 'Transfer' button.
    The Transfer Wizard opens and the 'Welcome' screen is displayed.
  3. Connect your device to your computer.
    Click 'Next'.
  4. The Transfer Wizard searches for a device.
    When your device is detected the 'Confirm' screen is displayed.
  5. Select the Part(s) you want to transfer.
    Click 'Next' to transfer the Part(s).
  6. When the transfer is complete, the 'Success' screen is displayed.
    Disconnect your device.
  7. Click 'Finish' to close the Transfer Wizard.

What requirements are there for transferring OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to Apple devices?

  • OverDrive Media Console v3.2.0.5 (or newer) for Windows or OverDrive Media Console for Mac v1.0 (or newer).
  • iTunes v9.1 (or newer) for Windows or iTunes v7.6.2.9 (or newer) for Mac.
  • On Mac, iTunes v9.1 (or newer) is required for transferring to the iPad. iTunes v8.1.0.52 (or newer) is required for transferring to the iPod shuffle.
  • The device must be formatted for use with your operating system.
  • The device must be set to 'Manually Manage Music…'

How do I set my Apple device to 'Manually Manage Music…'?

  1. Connect your device to your computer.
  2. Open iTunes.
  3. Locate the device in the left navigation panel (under heading 'DEVICES'), and click the device.
    The 'Summary' screen is displayed.
  4. Place a checkmark next to 'Manually manage music…'.
  5. Click 'Apply'.
    The iTunes 'Summary' screen refreshes, and your changes are saved.

How do I burn titles to CD?

  1. Open OverDrive Media Console for Mac or Windows.
  2. Select a title and click the 'Burn' button.
    The Burn Wizard opens, and the 'Welcome' screen is displayed.
  3. Insert a blank CD in your drive.
    Click 'Next'.
  4. The Burn Wizard searches for your drive.
    The 'Confirm' screen is displayed.
  5. Select the Part(s) to burn. Note: One Part typically takes one CD.
    Click 'Next'.
  6. When the burn completes, the 'Success' screen is displayed.
    Click 'Finish' to close the Burn Wizard.
