| Video Downloads are Heating Up at Public Libraries |
| |
 |
 | Download video is storming the world of digital media and now it is easier than ever to join the trend.
If your library currently has audio books or music, you can add video to your digital collection for only the cost of the content. To learn more about download video, click here.
To add OverDrive Video to your collection, you may select your own titles or select from a recommended list. Recently, we introduced the easiest and most affordable way to add video. For one flat rate, you can offer more than 500 video titles from Image Entertainment. Image is our leading video supplier of the highest circulating titles including IMAX movies and popular music concerts from James Brown, Cher, and Barry Manilow. We are continuously getting new content from Image Entertainment, and the best part of adding this collection to yours is that when we get it, so do you- at no additional cost.
The addition of the video format will appear nearly seamless with a quick website refresh. The checkout process remains the same because it uses the same platform as OverDrive Audio titles (OverDrive Media Console). As you have come to expect from us, we would review any changes to your website before they are implemented and we are available to answer your questions in a timely and friendly manner.
OverDrive is the leading provider with thousands of download videos for libraries available today in major markets such as New York, Cleveland, Miami, and Phoenix.

| Lee County Library System Sets Prime Example with Download Library |
| |
 |
 | Lee County (including Fort Myers) in Florida serves more than half a million residents, and stands to be one of the fastest growing areas in the U.S., circulating more than 3.5 million materials per year. Launching their Download Library in December, 2006 with audio books and video, Lee County is quickly making a splash among residents. "We have been pleasantly surprised by the growing usage that is continuing to increase every week," commented Deb Czarnik, Manager, Technical Services. The collection currently offers nearly 6,000 titles, including more than 4,500 audio books and over 1,000 video titles. Check it out here. "We found the Suggested Title Lists in Content Reserve like the NY Times Bestsellers to be very helpful," said Diana Dearing, Adult Collection Development Librarian. "It is great to see old radio shows such as Jack Benny being preserved in the new format and I was happily surprised to see the TV series 'Hearts Afire' with John Ritter and Markie Post." The library staff did an outstanding job of promoting the Download Library with bookmarks, brochures, and posters. They did demonstrations on the morning news, web advertising through local newspaper websites, and did a feature on the "Eye on Education" segment during the afternoon and evening news. "We demonstrated the product to library staff and many of us practiced at home," said Dearing. "We tell everyone we know about it." The Library Managers were provided a Creative MP3 player to demonstrate the download and transfer process at each regional library's OverDrive Download Station. Sharon Myers, a librarian at one of the branches, has a son serving in Iraq who downloads audio books from Lee County's Download Library. "We are reaching an entirely new group of patrons who enjoy downloadable technology and remote access," said Dearing. | |

Tech Talk: Using Content Reserve Reports By: Jim McCluskey, Sno-Isle Libraries |
| |
 |
 |
The reporting function in Content Reserve is a terrific resource for analyzing, promoting, and building your collection of digital media. Reports are menu driven so navigation is a snap and within moments you can have a snapshot of your collection. The Content Reserve reporting tools are easy to navigate and serve as a powerful analytic tool. All data can be exported to Excel, making it possible to combine data sets to look at your collection in greater detail if needed. Here are some ways you may want to use Content Reserve to look at your collection of digital media:
Promote
Use the Purchase Order report function to share with staff the new titles you add to the collection each month. Seeing a list of new titles will remind staff that the collection is growing and encourage staff to promote your collection to patrons.
Analyze
This is the time that many libraries have completed their Annual Statistical report. With Content Reserve it is possible to build reports that can mirror the data found in your library's annual statistical report. Turnover rates, circulation by month and format, new patron registrations, waiting list information, all of this information is easily found in Content Reserve. You can click 'Create Worksheet' and use Excel to keep this data in one place, and make sure it is added to your 2007 annual report.
Build
Use the Waiting List report to pick up additional copies of your most popular titles. My library has a 5 to 1 holds to copy ratio. I run this report weekly, and since additional copies appear instantaneously, patrons never need wait an excessively long time for their holds. The turnover rate by subject report can help you target those areas of the collection most popular with your patrons. | |

"Next"
By: Michael Crichton
Steve Potash, CEO
I really enjoy Crichton's ability to develop sci-fi tales based on strong, real-world scientific data. Here he tackles and entertains with controversy based on ethical and legal issues regarding human genetics research. "Next" takes the reader through a science lesson in research into the human genome and it is not easy to know when Crichton has taken you miles away from reality.
I found "Next" fascinating but quite different from his other novels. Unlike "Prey" or "State of Fear" with central characters, "Next" is a series of vignettes involving the reader with humans and animals and their encounters or participation with genetic engineering. In "Next" corporations, universities, and humans are competing for ownership and patents for their own tissues and cells. Do you own your body cells or can the government make them the property of a corporation?
As an entertaining and controversial mixture of science and science fiction, I recommend this eBook and audio book to everyone. Especially to those who appreciate how Michael Crichton uses his medical credentials to scare us about how labs will be manufacturing the next generation of human and other human-like species. |

"Anyone But You"
By: Jennifer Crusie
Shannon Mangan, Partner Services
"Anyone But You" by Jennifer Crusie has been on my "to listen to" list for months, and I finally had enough time to enjoy listening to it.
According to the AudioFile Review, this title is considered by many to be a romantic comedy classic. Crusie's wry, witty story tells of three intersecting characters: Nina Askew, a newly divorced 40-year-old editor; Alex Moore, the young ER doctor who lives downstairs; and Fred, the depressed dog who brings them together.
This story eases the sometimes negative aura that is attached to growing up and instead offers a bright outlook on the future. It makes you believe that what life has is store, whether or not it fits our plans, we can always count on someone (or animal) to be there. It emphasizes the value of friendship, be it with an old friend or a pet, or as Nina learned, possibly a new love interest who enters her life when she least expects.
