The Little Giant of Aberdeen County
The Little Giant of Aberdeen County
By Tiffany Baker

Truly Plaice, an overly large and ungainly girl, is the polar opposite of her sister, Serena Jane, the epitome of feminine perfection. With their parents dead, Truly and Serena Jane are separated: Serena Jane to live a life of privilege as the future May Queen and Truly to live on the outskirts of town, the subject of constant abuse and humiliation. There, while Serena Jane's beauty proves to be her biggest curse, Truly finds her calling-the ability to heal illness with herbs and naturopathic techniques-and, in reckoning with her demons, the possibility of love in unexpected places.

The 4-Hour Work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich
The 4-Hour Work Week
By Tim Ferriss

Tim Ferriss is an extraordinary young man on a mission. The twenty-eight-year-old serial vagabond and successful entrepreneur has been teaching a wildly popular course at Princeton University for the past four years - a how-to and why-to guide to throwing out the old tools and methods for success (balancing life and work, retiring well, having a great nest egg) and replacing them with a whole new way of living. Readers can lead a rich life by working only four hours a week, freeing up the rest of their time to spend it living the lives they want.

The Four-Hour Work Week shows and explains:

  • What is a lifestyle entrepreneur - and why you should want to become one.
  • How to replace your dreams with goals.
  • The 80/20 rule and how it increases productivity.
  • How to DEAL: Define, Eliminate, Automate, and Liberate.

The Adventures of Augie March
The Adventures of Augie March
By Saul Bellow

This grand-scale heroic comedy tells the story of the exuberant young Augie, a poor Chicago boy growing up during the Depression. While his neighborhood friends all settle down into their various chosen professions, Augie, as particular as an aristocrat, demands a special destiny. He latches on to a wild succession of occupations, proudly rejecting each one as too limiting. It is not until he tangles with a glamorous perfectionist named Thea, a huntress with a trained eagle, that his independence is seriously threatened. Luckily, his nature, like the eagle's, breaks down under the strain. He goes on to recruit himself to even more outlandish projects, but always ducks out in time to continue improvising his unconventional career.

Winner of a National Book Award, Bellow's story is a celebration of life whose humor is embedded in a serious moral view.

Showing Up For Life: Reflections of the Gifts of a Lifetime
Showing Up For Life
By Bill Gates

Showing Up for Life shines a light on the qualities that shaped Bill Gates, Sr.'s life as a husband, a father of three exceptional children, and a widely respected figure in the world of law and philanthropy. Like Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, Tuesdays with Morrie, and the recent runaway bestseller The Last Lecture, it translates one man's experiences over four score years of living into an inspiring roadmap for readers everywhere.

Through several dozen narratives arranged in roughly chronological order, Gates introduces the people and experiences that influenced his thinking and guided his moral compass. Through stories of his daughters Kristi and Libby, his late wife Mary and his current wife Mimi, and his work with Nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter, among others, he discusses the importance of hard work, getting along, honoring a confidence, speaking out, and much more.

Rules of Vengeance
By Christopher Reich

Months after foiling an attack on a commercial jetliner, Doctors Without Borders physician Jonathan Ransom is working under an assumed name in a remote corner of Africa, while his newly revealed spy wife, Emma, desperate to escape the wrath of Division, the secret American intelligence agency she betrayed, has vanished into the netherworld of international espionage. Both look forward to sharing a stolen weekend in London-until an ambush on a convoy of limousines turns their romantic rendezvous into a terrorist bloodbath. In the confusion, Emma disappears.

Jonathan is first hailed as a hero for his valiant actions during the violence, but when surveillance footage makes it unclear whether he was trying to stop the terrorists, or aid them, he quickly turns from savior to suspect. Once more on the run, Jonathan realizes that the only way to clear his name is to locate Emma, but finding her may prove that all along he's been a pawn in a game far beyond his imagining....

How to Build a Dinosaur: Extinction Doesn't Have to Be Forever
How to Build a Dinosaur
By Jack Horner

In movies, in novels, in comic strips, and on television, we've all seen dinosaurs---or at least somebody's educated guess of what they would look like. But what if it were possible to build, or grow, a real dinosaur without finding ancient DNA? Jack Horner, the scientist who advised Steven Spielberg on the blockbuster film Jurassic Park and a pioneer in bringing paleontology into the twenty-first century, teams up with the editor of the New York Times's Science Times section to reveal exactly what's in store.

In the 1980s, Horner began using CAT scans to look inside fossilized dinosaur eggs, and he and his colleagues have been delving deeper ever since. At North Carolina State University, Mary Schweitzer has extracted fossil molecules---proteins that survived 68 million years---from a Tyrannosaurus rex fossil excavated by Horner. At McGill University, Hans Larsson is manipulating a chicken embryo to awaken the dinosaur within---starting by getting it to grow a tail and eventually prompting it to grow the forelimbs of a dinosaur..

How to Build a Dinosaur is a tour of the hot rocky deserts and air-conditioned laboratories at the forefront of this scientific revolution.

Spilt Milk: Devotions for Moms
Spilt Milk
By Linda Vujnov

In a mother's land of milk and honey, the milk is often split and the honey is usually smeared all over the face of the baby in his high chair. Linda Vujnov has been there and knows exactly what it feels like. As she recounts the continuing adventures of parenting her four children, Maddy, Zack, Ty, and Carson, she offers a quirky, down-to-earth perspective on life for mothers who need to be reminded that God's grace is always there, even when things don't work out exactly as you had originally planned.

Spilt Milk is a collection of brief, hilarious stories mixed with biblically based applications that will encourage busy mothers in their spiritual journey. Each chapter includes a corresponding Scripture verse intended to support the lesson learned from the experience. Written by a Gen-X mom, these stories remind us that, even in the midst of the questions, the craziness, the wonder of raising kids, and the joy of being a wife, God is right there alongside us to help us cope with life's little messes and mix-ups.
